Albert Lofgren, born in Stockholm on the lith of September 1854, came to Brazil in 1874, as a member of he scientific mission headed by Dr. Andre Regnell. On the termination of their work, LOfgren decided to remain in Brazil. He entered the employ of the Paulista Railway Company as an engineer and became a Natural Science teacher. Invited to work with Orville Derby who had come out to organise the Geographical and Geological Bureau of the State of Sao Paulo, Lofgren created the Meteorological Bureau, the Botanical Department, and the Cantatareira Botanical Gardens (now the headquarters of the Forestry Department of Sao Paulo). Lofgren was one of the first to protest aganist the depredation of the forest reserves of Sao Paulo. ... |
